Sunshine Coast hinterland stays: the complete guide
The country behind the Sunshine Coast holds most of the region's small accommodation. Here's where it is, when to book it, and which beds are worth your night besides ours.

Where the hinterland actually is
The hinterland is the country behind the beaches. It runs north from the Glass House Mountains through Maleny and Montville, over the Blackall Range, then out past Eumundi and Yandina Creek towards the Noosa end. Old dairy land, mostly. Some of it still is.
From most of it you’re 15 to 30 minutes from sand. Brisbane sits about 1.5 hours south by car. That pairing is why people book up here instead of on the coast strip. You get the beach when you want it, and a road with nothing on it when you don’t.
The trade is elevation. Maleny and Montville sit high enough that a July morning wants a jumper, and summer afternoons build storms that arrive and leave inside the hour. Yandina Creek is further down, which matters if you plan on sitting outside in winter.
People treat the range as one place and it isn’t. Half an hour separates rainforest cabins at Montville from cane country at Yandina Creek, and the two behave differently in the same week of weather.

Book 2 to 3 months out
That’s the honest window for a weekend up here, and it catches out anyone used to booking a coastal hotel a fortnight ahead.
The reason is inventory. Hinterland properties are small. A guesthouse with six rooms fills on a long weekend while a resort down on the coast still has floors of them free. School holidays go first, then the run from June through September, then any weekend the Eumundi markets pull demand towards the northern end.
If your dates can’t move, book earlier than the window. If they can, take a Tuesday in February and have the range to yourself.

Five places up here that aren't us
Guests ask this every week, usually because family is coming and they need more rooms than we hold. This is what we tell them. We have no arrangement with any of these and we earn nothing if you book one.

- Maleny A guesthouse in the town rather than out of it, so you can walk to dinner. That's rare up here, where most stays need a car for everything.

- Montville Cabins in rainforest. Quiet in a way that takes a night to get used to if you've come from a city.
- Glass House Mountains Ecolodge
- The southern end, under the peaks Closer to Brisbane than to Noosa, which suits anyone driving up for one night rather than three.
A hinterland trip that only works if you sleep in one particular place isn’t much of a trip. Spread it across two nights in two towns and you’ll see more of the range than any single booking gets you.
Staying here
Cottages named after cattle runs
Our own beds are cottages on the station, called Whidlka-Whidlka, Pooreema and Canando. Three of the four runs held from this head station in 1856 carried those names. Nobody picked them for how they sound.
What you get here that the range can’t give you is the working part. Cattle are in the paddock while you’re on the deck, the Bando Brahman stud is still run off the same ground, and first light comes up over pasture. The run dates to 1853 and the events came later.
How many people sleep here in total is a figure we’re still settling, so we won’t print one. The cottages page says what is known and leaves the rest alone.
Getting around once you’re up here
Sunshine Coast Airport is 20 kilometres from us. We publish the distance and not a drive time. Every drive time in circulation was worked backwards from that one number, they disagree with each other, and an earlier version of this very page carried a figure that contradicted the rest of our own site. Your maps app will do it better than we can.
Roads up here are rural, and several of the ridge roads have a drop on one side. Take Montville to Maleny in daylight the first time you do it. Kangaroos move at dusk along the flatter country near Yandina Creek, which is worth knowing before you book a table at eight.
Don’t assume a rideshare will arrive at a rural address at eleven at night. Ask wherever you’re staying what they’ve actually seen work, because a coastal address and a paddock address behave differently at that hour.
